ASP.NET gets my respect :D

I hate that people think of MySpace when they think of ASP.NET --it's hard to imagine a worse poster child. For years, MySpace was written in Cold Fusion. During the migration to ASP.NET, they had some kind of "bridge", which caused a number of issues. The stability of MySpace has since increased, but it's obvious to me that the code that powers their website was written poorly. I've noticed a number of hacks that they've thrown together, so I'm fairly convinced that I'm correct.

The author of this article also seems a bit out of touch with times. I would say right now the hot "new" web paradigm is Ruby on Rails. It also worth noting that although MS started with a headstart when it first came out with asp.net, it has since lagged far behind in being the pioneer. Things like Ajax, MVC, Velocity seem to be an after thought while developers pick up technologies like jQuery, ROR, memcached to fill in the gaps. The overall analysis is largely true, ASP.NET doesn't get any respect but we can hardly blame developers for picking the best tool available today.

I'm sorry, did you just say that ROR was the best tool available today? Excuse me while I die of laughter...

I havent looked much into ROR, but i keep reading about scalability-issues? There will allways be developers outside making greater stuff than microsoft (i am pretty sure microsoft are prototyping some cool stuff all the time), but Microsoft just cant push out "random" cool stuff out, it also needs to support it.

Lets say that Microsoft currently are lacking in regards to asp.net, but hey, the great thing is that they are working at it. The way they handle the development of MVC is just great, with frequent drops, and communication with the targeted audience.

While I like ROR and the speed in which one can write it.
<rant>I feel due to the ASP.NET team (Scott Gu and friends)making what in my mind was closed source (unavailable libraries) available and hiring open source developers as well as those in the community aimed at making the web a more "well oiled" (using machine reference here cause shouldn't it be considered that?) Engine able to produce better commerce and social networking while keeping a grip on security and best practices (wow that was a long sentence).

So to compare technologies like ROR, PHP, Java (I know I am missing some) with ASP.NET. The idea is not to downplay and say one is better than the other but to find more ways to work closer with these various techniques and improve the overall user experience.

ASP.NET does deserve respect and has gained mine through Microsoft making moves to integrate and play nice with developers as well as those technologies we think are the "Best"
