I just installed the Allocation Information add-in for SQL Server Management Studio. It's very cool having this tool integrated into SSMS.
Using [] and ESCAPE clause in SQL Server LIKE query

I innocently wrote this SQL SELECT statement to query all rows that have column value started with "[summary]":

select * from MyTable where Description like '[summary]%'

Then I was wondering why I could get a lot of rows returned and none of them started with "[summary]". Hmm, I think I need to look at the SQL Server reference. Well, I only remember the usage of '%' and '_' wildcards in the LIKE clause pattern. The first one will match empty string or any character(s), while the second one is to match any single character only.

Apparently '[' and ']' characters are special wildcard to match any character within specific range, for example: '[a-z]' to match any character from a to z, '[xyz]' to match 'x', 'y' or 'z' character. So in my example above, it will query all rows with Description column started with either of these characters: 's', 'u', 'm', 'a', 'r' or 'y'. Therefore, I should use ESCAPE clause, and re-write the query statement to be:

select * from MyTable where Description like '|[summary|]%' escape '|'

This query now returns the correct result I want.

Love SQL 2008 Express RTM but no tools yet...

When you download SQL 2008 Express, the version available currently does not have tools like SQL Management Studio. The tools will be available soon but if you are like me and cannot wait for the tools to become available, you can use Visual Studio 2008 to perform a lot of tasks. Visual Studio 2008 Server Explorer allows you to connect to SQL Server 2008 Express RTM and attach databases, view objects, etc.

However, let's say you need to grant access to a database to an account so that your web application can use SQL Server 2008 Express. The account that would need access to SQL Express is the account configured for the worker process in IIS. Here are steps to grant read/write access to a database to a user in SQL Server 2008 Express using the command-line interface:

As I mentioned yesterday, we've shipped SQL Server 2008. I highly recommend you get it and install it on your testing machines right away. But before you do anything on your production systems, make sure you check out this free webcast:

The hidden browser: SSMS

Did you know there is a full IE browser inside SQL Server Management Studio? Just click on "View", then "Other Windows" then "Web Browser".
I use this to hit a server that has a report of various server's status.

Managment Studio 2008 Intellisense on SQL Server 2005 Databases

The RTM version of the product will not support intellisense for 2000 or 2005 instances. While I understand the exclusion of SQL 2000 as it is no longer a supported version I believe SQL 2005 should be included. Many development shops will have versions of 2005 and 2008 running.

VS 2008 SP1: Add Reference to ADO.Net Data Service

Not a log time ago, when Visual Studio 2008 SP1 Beta was released, I updated my ADO.Net Data Services series to the SP1 bits. In my post Visual Studio 2008 SP1: Querying an ADO.Net Data Service via .Net Client I showed how to use datasvcutil.exe to generate the client side classes in order to consume the data service.

In SP1 of Visual Studio 2008, things are a bit easier, with the Add Service Reference improvements that now supports ADO.Net Data Service references.
