Microsoft reveals .NET code

Today it was revealed that Microsoft will release the sourcecode to parts of the .NET Framework. This means you won't have to peek through disassemblers such as Reflector any longer to understand what's going on under the hood (yes, the .NET Framework libraries are unobfuscated and the IL can be reverse-engineered).

Frans Bouma Is Right About The .Net Source Release (Mostly)

Ok, so I got a little cranky and wrote Microsoft Releases .Net Framework Source ... and Receives Criticism. I did a stupid thing, over-generalized and assumed that all criticism Microsoft had received to that point would be the same mindless drivel about how everything they do is chock-full of pure evil....

Source code to ship with Visual Studio 2008

In what is easily the single best piece of news I have heard since coming to Microsoft, Scott Guthrie has announced today that we will be releasing the source code to the .NET framework when we ship Visual Studio 2008 later this year.

Why Microsoft can't ship open source code

I've suggested a few times that Microsoft could go beyond just cooperating with the open source community and actually ship open source code. For instance, Paint.NET is a great alternative to MS Paint, so not just bundle it? Tonight I had a very long conversation with someone who is in a position to really understand both Microsoft and open source. Now I understand why my suggestion - though well intentioned - was hopelessly naive.

Why not make ASP.NET Web Matrix shared source?

Web Matrix was a really cool tool, and it's obviously been rendered obsolete by Visual Studio Express. However, there are still alot of really cool things done in the code, and I think it would be beneficial to the community if the source code were made available.
